LOCAL MARKET UPDATE

While we finally saw an increase in new listings in March, there was an even greater jump in sales.Lack of supply continued to push prices to new record highs. For the fifth straight month, our region has experienced the sharpest home price increases of any major market in the country. While that may be tough news for buyers, here’s the other reality: rents in the city of Seattle have increased 57 percent in the last six years. Brokers are hoping that more sellers will jump into the market this spring to help meet buyer demand.

Eastside Equestrian Life Business of the Month for April

This marks the third and final part of my three-part series on equestrian inspired fragrance for home and body. Last month I introduced you to Nasreen from Parfumerie Nasreen in the Alexis Hotel in downtown Seattle where the lovely Nasreen took us on an odyssey to find the perfect personal fragrance. This month’s quest finds us searching for the equally perfect fragrance for our home.

One of the biggest and most robust industries in home fragrance is most obviously, the candle market. Though reed diffusers, sprays and other various forms of home fragrance litter the aisles of fine fragrance stores, there is something about a candle that sets it apart from the competition. There is no denying that the act of lighting a candle and letting the scent gently perfume the air carries with it millions of years of tradition and ties us inexorably from our cave man roots. There also is no denying that there is a certain satisfaction that comes from leaning closely to a lit candle, capturing the last wisp of fragrance and heat close on your face then gently blowing the flame out. It’s as if to say, “thank you for the experience -until we met again”.

Many many perfumers are attempting to capture the spirit of the equestrian life in a home fragrance. What better way to harken us back to crisp fall days on the hacking trail or lazy summer twilight hours spent at the other end of a lead line watching our best friend dry in the sun after a summer bath?
Here are two of my favorite home fragrances I found on this most delightful journey.

April Neighborhood Update / Eastside Equestrian Life

Roja Candles: in fragrance “Leather”- described as “seductive, suave and ultra-sensual. This luxurious and exotic blend is pure hedonism.” I mostly just thought it smelled warm and snuggly like my horses neck. Price $100-$150. You can purchase at Parfumerie Nasreen in Seattle or order online at Bergdorf Goodman in New York. www.parfumerienasreen.com

Diptyque Candles: in fragrance “Feu de Bois/Wood Fire”. I don’t typically roast marshmallows with my horse but if I did I’m sure this is the fragrance it would conjure . Warm, delicious and smoky! Described on the Diptyque website as a “sophisticated blend of rare woods recalls the crackling of an open fire. Warm and familiar during the winter days.” www.diptyqueparis.com
